African nationals living in South Africa are mobilizing themselves to launch a World Cup winning campaign for their national teams when the tournament kicks off on June 11.
From 1958 to 1992, South Africa was suspended from international soccer by FIFA, as a sanction against the prevailing racial segregation in the country. Black populations in country nevertheless played the game and used the discipline in the sport to circumvent association bans enforced by the white minority, as well as to maintain ties with militants in exile.
Football is an international language. It knows no boundaries. And it is not only the players that are acquiring this language, but also the fans.
About 200 football supporters are embarking on a bumpy road trip from Ghana’s capital Accra to South Africa to watch the much-anticipated 2010 World Cup.
