Amos Gumulira

Amos Gumulira is a Malawian photojournalist currently working with Nation Publications Limited (NPL) in Lilongwe since December 2004. NPL publishes The Nation, Weekend Nation and Nation on Sunday.

Before joining NPL, Amos worked starting in 1998 with Blantyre Newspapers Limited, publishers of Daily Times, Malawi News, Sunday Times and The Weekend Times. Internationally, he is Malawi’s picture correspondent (photographer) for Agence France Presse (AFP)/Getty Images since 2007. He has won several local and international awards, including 2009 National Media Institute of Southern Africa (NAMISA) Photojournalist of the Year, joint award winner of the 2009 NAMISA Humans Rights Journalist of the Year, the joint award winner of the 2009 NAMISA Overall Journalist of the Year, the 2009 TNM Super League Photojournalist of the Year, 1999 Malawi Press Photographer of the Year.

He has his diploma in Photography from The Institute of Photography in Pretoria, South Africa. He also has two photojournalism certificates: one from the Malawi Institute of Journalism and one from the Nordic SADC Journalism Centre. He also has a certificate in journalism from the Malawi Institute of Journalism. He is currently studying for a diploma in Professional Photography with the Institute of Professional Photography in the UK. Amos’ fields of interests include news and feature photography, sports news photography, nature and wildlife photography, travel photography and commissioned assignments. His future plans are to launch a picture agency and develop his interest in teaching photography to beginners. His hobbies are traveling and reading professional books, magazines and newspapers.
