Julius Mwelu works as a freelance photography and is the founder of the Mwelu Foundation, a photography and video project for youth in Mathare, one of the largest slums in Africa. He is interested in taking photos related to any subject, especially war zones, football and slum life. His work has appeared in numerous exhibitions in Kenya, the Netherlands, Uganda, the US, Germany, Spain and France. He has been awarded several international awards: first place prize Bayeux-Caldavos Award for war correspondents, first place prize Friends of the Earth International Photo Competition, and the Africalia Belgium Award for the film Shoot Back! His hobbies include making movies, photography, music and playing football with youths.

The women of the the Old is Gold women’s football team from Mathare slums in Nairobi love nothing more than to pull on a pair of shorts, sit their children on the sidelines and jump onto an often muddy football pitch for a kick about.

Homemade soccer

Children in the Muthare slum in Nairobi, Kenya can’t afford a real soccer ball so they make a plan. Searching for plastic bags at dump sites, they collect enough to make a soccer ball out of the bags and a ball of string. Soccer brings joy to their lives and ingenuity ensures they keep the joy alive.
